Bulldozing the Bridge

Despite assurances from the French authorities that the businesses in the Jungle bordering the 100m section designated for clearance would be safe, today all the structures on either side of the main road at the bridge entrance - which were all shops and restaurants - have been razed to the ground.

This is what the street looks like today. Yesterday, there were shops and restaurants lining either side of it.

The bulldozers have also moved in to clear the land in the100m zone that the aid agencies were coerced into creating by the authorities for the authorities. This is the land that was home to 1500 refugees in the Jungle. Many now suspect that a third security fence will be installed along this newly created boundry.

It has been very distressing to see land that, when I arrived, was home to hundreds of people being heartlessly bulldozed by the French authorities to create a barren no man's land in their war against refugees who seek noting more than a safe life in Europe - a continent which many of them believe upholds the values of human rights to a greater extent than their home countries.

The day's events were overseen by a greatly expanded CRS presence.

And the water canon was on standby around the corner.
